External Hard Drive

Monday, March 9, 2009

I finally got around to pruchasing an external HDD this week. The one that I finally decided on was an Iomega Prestige 1Tb Desktop Hard Drive.

To be honest, there was not much to choose between the different makes and models, but I chose this one because I wanted a brushed aluminium finish, to match my ‘xPC Shuttle’ computer, which it now sits atop, and also because this model uses a Seagate hard drive, rather than some unknown far-eastern make.

To top it all, the price was quite amazing. At less than £70, this works out as less than seven pence per gigabyte.

Good points -

  • Reliable drive manufacturer.
  • Fairly quiet and fast operation.
  • Neat stylish looks.
  • 1 Terrabyte storage (a thousand Gigabytes, or a million Megabytes).

Bad points -

  • Very short cables, particularly the USB cable (you can always use another cable – just make sure that it is good quality).
  • As with all drives that are 1Tb or greater, it is not ’self powered’ through the usb cable.
  • It comes with an external power adapter.
  • No software supplied in the box. This can be downloaded for free from the Iomega site. (It does not need the software to work, unless you need scheduled backups).

Specification -

  • 1Tb capacity
  • USB 2 interface
  • Power adapter
  • Brushed aluminium cabinet (dark)
  • Plug & play
  • PC or MAC
  • Desk stand supplied
  • Reliable make
