Bit Rate
The bit rate is how much data per second is required to transmit the resulting file. As you might imagine, this is basically the sum of the Bit Depth times the Sample rate. Bear in mind that we are only talking about a single audio channel here, so if you are recording stereo, the Bit rate and storage requirements will double, and if you want multi-track, then multiply by the number of tracks.
A CD is 16bit, 44.1 That is 44,100 slices, each having 65,536 levels. A new Audio interface may record 96,000 slices a second at nearly 17 million levels for every slice. The Bit Rate is normally expressed as Mbit/sec (Millions of bits a second). What is important for you is how this translates to your hard drive storage. Typically, a compact disk (16-bit and 44.1kHz) has a Bit Rate of approximately 1.35 Mbit/sec.
24/96 audio (24 Bit @ 96kHz) has a Bit Rate of approximately 4.39 Mbit/sec.
